Diversity in Aviation — Women, Minorities, and Representation

Women represent approximately 5-7% of all licenced pilots worldwide, though this number is growing. European GA clubs and flight schools are generally welcoming, though women on aviation forums report occasional experiences of being underestimated, mansplained to, or assumed to be a passenger rather than the pilot. Organisations like the British Women Pilots' Association (BWPA), Women in Aviation International (Europe), and national AOPA chapters actively support women in aviation with scholarships, mentoring, and networking events. Many women pilots report that once airborne, gender is irrelevant — it's about skill and airmanship. The community is improving, but there's work to be done on representation.

EASA Part-MED requires female pilots to notify the aviation authority or AME as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. Under EASA rules, the medical certificate is typically suspended during pregnancy and reinstated after recovery following the end of pregnancy, subject to AME assessment. Many AMEs will allow flying during the first trimester with limitations (no aerobatics, limited G-loading), but policies vary by member state and individual AME assessment. The main concerns are: hypoxia risk at altitude, G-forces, the effects of a potential emergency landing, and comfort in small cockpits. Most female pilots stop flying during pregnancy as a personal safety decision rather than waiting for a regulatory grounding. Consult your AME early.
