Tecnam P2002 Sierra

GAPiston single-engine

Last updated: 2026-04-21

The Tecnam P2002 Sierra is an Italian-built, aluminium low-wing, two-seat aircraft powered by a 100 hp Rotax 912S, widely used at European ATOs and aero clubs for LAPL(A) and ab-initio PPL(A) training. It is a workhorse of European EASA general-aviation training fleets, used at both DTO and ATO operators for hour-building and rating progression. Its straightforward piston single-engine layout is ideal for early SEP rating training.

What is the Tecnam P2002 Sierra used for in flight training?

The P2002 Sierra has a large installed base across European flying clubs. Its aluminium structure provides familiar maintenance characteristics, while the Rotax 912S delivers fuel economy superior to older Continental and Lycoming-powered trainers. The side-by-side cockpit offers good instructor visibility of student controls. Many clubs use the P2002 as an affordable first-hours trainer before transitioning students to larger four-seat types for navigation training. Its LAPL certification supports the increasingly popular route that begins with the lighter licence.
