Diamond DA42 Twin Star

GAPiston twin-engine

Last updated: 2026-04-21

The Diamond DA42 Twin Star is a twin-engine composite aircraft powered by Austro AE300 diesel engines, offering glass cockpit avionics and jet-fuel compatibility for advanced MEP and MCC preparation. It is a workhorse of European EASA general-aviation training fleets, used at both DTO and ATO operators for hour-building and rating progression. Its twin-engine configuration is widely used for MEP and IR training under EASA Part-FCL.

What is the Diamond DA42 Twin Star used for in flight training?

The DA42 bridges light piston training and jet-preparation better than any legacy twin. Its FADEC-controlled engines teach automation management concepts directly transferable to jet type ratings, while the Garmin G1000 avionics prepare students for the screens they will see on the A320 and 737. Jet-A1 fuel compatibility eliminates avgas dependency, important as European airports progressively reduce avgas availability. The DA42's high-altitude cruise performance enables realistic high-level IFR training. Integrated ATOs running MPL or ATPL programmes often use the DA42 as the final multi-engine piston type before jet or turboprop conversion.
