European airspace follows ICAO classifications with some regional variations. Understanding which airspace you are in, what services are available, and what weather minima apply is fundamental knowledge for every pilot.
EASA Airspace Classes
Class A
- IFR only - VFR flights not permitted
- ATC clearance required
- All flights separated by ATC
- Typically used for high-level airways
Class B
- IFR and VFR permitted
- ATC clearance required
- All flights separated
- Often used around major airports
Class C
- IFR and VFR permitted
- ATC clearance required
- IFR separated from all traffic
- VFR receives traffic information
Class D
- IFR and VFR permitted
- ATC clearance required
- Common around controlled aerodromes
- Traffic information provided
Class E
- IFR and VFR permitted
- No ATC clearance needed for VFR
- IFR separated from other IFR
- Traffic information where possible
Class F and G
- Uncontrolled airspace
- No ATC clearance required
- Traffic information where available

VFR Weather Minima
Different airspace classes have different minimum weather requirements for VFR flight:
At and Below 3000ft AMSL (or 1000ft AGL)
- Class C, D, E: 5km visibility, clear of cloud, surface in sight
- Class F, G: 5km visibility (1500m in certain conditions), clear of cloud
Above 3000ft AMSL (or 1000ft AGL)
- 8km visibility above FL100, 5km below
- 1500m horizontal, 1000ft vertical distance from cloud
